Whilst fishing off the rocks in Simon's Town, a recreational fisherman slipped and lost his footing on a wet rock, and fell from the height of standing. NOInitially, no injuries where suspected, but after a troubled nights sleep and experiencing pain through out the next work day, the patient reported to the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital ER for medical assistance. After a through clinical examination, a diagnosis of "fractured ribs" was made, pain medication and an anti-inflammatory provided, and two weeks rest recommended. |
A fractured rib
A fractured rib may be described as a break in continuity of one or more ribs, the bones making up the wall of your chest. A break in the cartilage that connects the ribs to the breastbone may also be referred to as a fracture, even if the bone itself is not broken. They usually result from a fall, or major force to the thorax. A force that is significant enough to result in fractured ribs, may also cause other injuries and requires adequate investigations.

Your ribs are responsible for protecting the organs of your chest and assisting in breathing by lifting and lowering the chest wall through the coordination of muscle movement. These muscles are attached directly to and in-between the ribs, thus a fractured rib may negatively affect one's breathing through eliciting a pain response during the breathing cycle. Symptoms of a rib fracture may include:
In severe cases, symptoms may include:
- Mild to severe pain over the injured area
- Pain during breathing
- Pain around the fracture if someone were to push on your breast bone
In severe cases, symptoms may include:
- A feeling of shortness of breath
- Extensive bruising over and around the affected area
- Feelings of anxiety and restlessness
Whilst most rib fractures are isolated and can be adequately managed on an out patient basis with analgesia and anti-inflammatory's, they may be associated with complications including a punctured lung (pneumothorax); lacerated liver, spleen or kidney.

Safety when fishing Never fish by yourself: Always fish in a group of people, and remain within sight of each other. Wear light and warm clothing: If you are washed into the ocean, it is far easier to remove light clothing than heavy jackets. Inform others of your plan: Let someone know where you are going and what time you will be back. Fish only in places you know are safe: Make sure you are aware of local weather and tidal patterns. Be aware of conditions that may rapidly change. Observe first, fish later: Take time to observe the area you intend to fish at. Note the tide movement and make sure a high tide will not affect to access or egress. Stay alert: Never turn your back on the sea. If the waves, weather or another factor threaten your fishing spot, change it immediately. Ask for advice from local who know the area: The locals generally have an intimate knowledge of the area, and apart from providing you with the best places to fish, could provide important information regarding hazards specific to the area. Wear the correct shoes: Many slips and falls can be prevented by wearing the correct foot wear. Dress for the weather: Protect yourself from the sun and wind. Fishing exposes a person to a variety of elements, always be prepared. Don't jump in to assist someone who has fallen off the rocks: Instead, track their position form land and phone the emergency services immediately. Watch out for your hook: Handle all tackle with care. Even the most experienced fisherman may end up hooking themselves. |
